Detailed Information:
A letter from the Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong to the Chairperson and Elders of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative, dated the 7th July 1997, stated:

'In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and in the spirit of reconciliation, I have pleasure in presenting this tree to the Wathaurong people on behalf of the Council and residents of the City of Greater Geelong. The planting of this tree will be accompanied by the delivery of additional Indigenous trees for the area surrounding the Wathaurong Meeting Place and ultimately the laying of a plaque recognising this plant as the 'Referendum' Tree.'
