Summary Information: | ||
The Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy (DATSIP) is the Queensland Government's lead agency for Indigenous affairs. It aims to improve the cultural, economic, physical and social well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders by creating effective alliances and partnerships with other Government agencies and community groups. DATSIP's approach is embodied in its long term planning framework, 'Towards a Queensland Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ten Year Partnership 2001-2011'. As part of this Ten Year Partnership it is committed to reducing the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over-represented in the Queensland criminal justice system. In this regard the Department is responsible for coordinating the development of the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Agreement. The Department falls under the portfolio of the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy, Minister for Families, Minister for Disability Services, and Minister for Seniors. The Department has a staff of 220, employed in a central office and six regional offices. It relies increasingly on working in co-operation with other Government agencies to achieve its objectives. |
