The Kalkaringi Constitutional Convention, organised by the Central Land Council and funded by ATSIC, was held near the site of the historic Wave Hill Walk-off.
More than 800 people gathered to discuss wide-spread concern about issues of Statehood for the Northern Territory including the Draft Constitution which had been endorsed by the Northern Territory Parliament and the proposed referendum on Statehood.
The meeting rejected the Draft Territory Constitution and agreed to withhold consent to Statehood until there were good faith negotiations between the Government and Aboriginal people leading to a Constitution based on 'equality, co-existence and mutual respect'.
The Kalkaringi Statement which was developed by the Combined Aboriginal Nations of Central Australia at the Convention was unanimously endorsed and signed by approximately 50 senior elders. |
