    Summary Information:
The Snap Lake Diamond Project Environmental Agreement (Snap Lake EA) is one of three agreements signed by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and De Beers Canada Mining Inc (DBCMI) on 21 May 2004. The Snap Lake EA sets out DBCMI's commitments regarding responsible environmental management, with a particular focus on the preservation of wildlife, air and water quality. The Snap Lake EA was developed in collaboration with the Yellowknives Dene Band, Lutsel K'e Dene Band, the North Slave Metis Alliance and the federal government. It requires the establishment of a monitoring agency, which is to be composed of the four affected Aboriginal groups. The agency will oversee the environmental management of the project and is to receive support from a Science and Technical Panel, two Traditional Knowledge working groups and a secretariat. While DBCMI is to fund the agency, it will also receive financial contribution from the governments of Canada and NWT for the first two years of its operation. DBCMI is also required to prepare environmental management plans and monitoring programs to ensure that any environmental concerns are addressed.

The other agreements associated with the project include a Socio-Economic Agreement and an Agreement to Support the Secondary Diamond Industry in the NWT, relating to the Snap Lake project.
