Summary Information: | ||
The Innisfail 'Baddagun Performers' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) provides new employment opportunities for Innisfail's Indigenous youth at nearby Paronella Park. The Paronella Park operates in partnership with the Baddagun Aboriginal Corporation to offer traditional Indigenous dance performances at the tourist park. The SRA aims to upgrade the opportunities for employment and enhance the standard of park performances. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The focus of the Innisfail SRA is to provide jobs through culture. Innisfail is a regional town and 1220 of Innisfail's 8400 residents are Indigenous Australians. Approximately half of the Indigenous population is under 24 years of age. The SRA aims to provide employment opportunities especially for these younger Indigenous residents. Shared Responsibilities Under the SRA, the Baddagun Aboriginal Corporation, representing the local Indigenous Community, will nominate performers to be involved in the scheme, transport performers to the venue and provide performers with cultural training. The Commonwealth Government will provide $169,000 towards performance facilities. Improvements include a cover for the performance area, and new sound and lighting equipment. A project manager will also be employed to manage the provision of training skills development and mentoring for the young dances. A broad employment strategy for the community will be developed. The Innisfail SRA will be administered by the Cairns Indigenous Coordination Centre. |
