The Shire of Burke is located in far north Queensland on the Gulf of Carpentaria. It was proclaimed on 31 January 1885. The Shire Council is responsible for the provision of municipal services to the community. The
shire has a strong rural base and two townships; Burketown and Gregory
Downs.There is a resident population of around 550 people in the shire.
Burketown is the more populous township and is 2,115km to the north west
of Brisbane and 2,100km from Darwin. The communities of the Shire of
Burke are diverse with significant Indigenous populations including the
Gangalidda-Garawa and Waanyi traditional owner groups. |
