| The agreement area is located in the Boyne River valley about 15 kms south east of Calliope and covers an area of about 90 sq kms. The area covers Lot 5 on CTN217, Lot 61 on CTN1327 and all land up to the Full Supply Level of Awoonga Dam. The area falls within the Shire of Calliope local government area. |

The Raising of Awoonga Dam Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the ILUA) was made between Gooreng Gooreng, Bailai and Gurang native title claimants and the Gladstone Area Water Board. The agreement allowed 'the flooding of unallocated State land and a camping reserve as well as the realignment of the Gladstone to Monto Road so the local dam could be filled to capacity.' (National Native Title Tribunal, 'Tribunal gives green light to Awoonga dam agreement' (Media Release, 20 March 2001)).
The native title parties agreed to the grant of all 'approvals, consents, licences, permits, authorities, easements, title and other entitlement necessary' for the raising of the dam.(National Native Title Tribunal, Extract from the Register of Indigenous Land Use Agreements for QIA2000/004 (at 26 July 2004)). |
