Summary Information:

The Central Land Council (CLC) was one of four councils established as a result of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (the Act). The Northern Land Council and the Central Land Council were established on an interim basis in 1973 following Justice Woodward's first report, and the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission 1973, on how to recognise Aboriginal Land Rights in the Northern Territory.

In accordance with the Act, the functions of each land council are: to ascertain and express the wishes and opinions of Aboriginals living in the area concerning the management of Aboriginal land in that area; to protect the interests of traditional Aboriginal owners of land in that area; to consult with traditional Aboriginal owners of land in that area concerning proposed uses of the land.

The CLC is also a Representative Body under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).
