| The ML5330 Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the ILUA) is one of three ILUAs made between the Dja Dja Wurung People of central Victoria and three mine operators, opening the way for the grant of mining licences, local employment opportunities and cultural protection initiatives. The Dja Dja Wurrung agree to the grant of Mining Licence (ML) 5330 and to 'any act necessary' to enable the mining project to occur under the ML and other relevant laws. Without this ILUA the longer timeframes of the right to negotiate provisions of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) may apply to the grant of the ML. Among the benefits to flow from the ILUAs is a commitment from the miners to protect Aboriginal heritage on the mine sites and to consult with the native title group about environmental protection. The Dja Dja Wurung People have also retained their rights to pursue their native title claim over the wider area. | ||
