The Ngarda Ngarli Yarndu Foundation (the Foundation) was incorporated in 2000. It was established to alleviate poverty among the Indigenous people in the Ngarli Ngarli Yarndu region of the Pilbara. In order to achieve this, the Foundation planned to raise funds and make investments that would generate long-term returns. Thus the company Ngarda Civil & Mining Pty Ltd was created in order to develop contracting opportunities in the Pilbara region. The Foundation is a 25 percent shareholder of Ngarda Civil and Mining whilst Henry Walker Eltin (50 percent) and Indigenous Business Australia (25 percent) are the other shareholders.
The Joint Venture, consisting of contracts with BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto (Robe), is valued at $21 million, and has to date employed 90 people, the majority of whom are Indigenous. |
