The Wilderness Society (TWS) is an Australian incorporated association. It is a 'community-based, environmental advocacy organisation whose purpose is protecting, promoting and restoring wilderness and natural processes across Australia for the survival and ongoing evolution of life on Earth.'
TWS was established in Tasmania in 1976, and was at the forefront of the campaign against the damming of the Franklin River. According to the organisation website, TWS 'supports indigenous people's land and sea rights, and is committed to proper and detailed consultation with affected indigenous people before and during campaigns to protect wilderness and biological diversity.'
TWS derives its funding from member dues, donations, grants, bequasts and sales from TWS shops around Australia. As at 30 June 2005 ,TWS total assets came to AU$4,299,730. |
