The Cobourg Peninsula Sanctuary Land Trust ('the Trust') is a statutory body corporate established under the Cobourg Peninsula Aboriginal Land, Sanctuary and Marine Park Act 1987 (NT) ('the Act'). The Trust consists of a Chairperson and three other members appointed by the Northern Land Council ('NLC').
The Trust holds inalienable title to the Cobourg Peninsula Sanctuary in trust for Aboriginal People, who are entitled under the Act to use and occupy the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is established in perpetuity as a national park 'for the benefit and enjoyment of all people' and must be used in accordance with any plan of management in force. The NT Government pays an annual fee to the NLC for the use of the Sanctuary as a national park.
Pursuant to the 1996 amendments to the Cobourg Peninsula Land and Sanctuary Act 1981 (NT) under the Cobourg Peninsula Aboriginal Land, Sanctuary and Marine Park Act 1996 (NT), the Trust also supervises management of the adjacent Cobourg Marine Park, which includes customary marine clan estates of the Traditional Owners. |
