The North Island Deed of Management was made between the Barranyi Aboriginal Corporation and the Conservation Commission of the Northern Territory.
The Barranyi Corporation as the registered proprietor of the land has leased the land to the Conservation Land Corporation for the purposes of a national park.
Pursuant to the Conservation Commission Act 1980 (NT), the Commission will maintain care, control and management of all land in accordance with the lease, and the relevant plan of management. |

Situated within the Sir Edward Pellew group of islands in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Barranyi (North Island) National Park covers some 5421 hectares. The islands and surrounding waters display a high species diversity relative to the adjacent mainland. Barranyi (North Island) National Park has an interesting history of Aboriginal occupation, and an unusual assemblage of flora and fauna. The management plan for the Park aims to help reconcile competing interests, identify priorities for the allocation of competing resources, and involve the Park's traditional Aboriginal custodians in the establishment of management priorities and development strategies.
A second plan of management has now been prepared for the Park (dating from October 2004). It concentrates on improving the biological knowledge base and managing threats such as fire and weeds. | |
