Summary Information:
'Building a Better Future: Indigenous Housing to 2010' is a document arising out of the Housing Ministers' Conference of 4 May 2001 which outlines the new directions for improving Indigenous housing over the next 10 years. It is an affirmation of a commitment by the Commonwealth, State and Territory Housing Ministers including the Commonwealth Minister for Reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, to a national effort to make a real difference in housing and environmental health outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
Detailed Information:
The 'Vision for Better Indigenous Housing' set out in the document states:
  • 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia will have access to affordable and appropriate housing which contributes to their health and well being and access to housing which is safe, well-designed and appropriately maintained.
  • There will be a vigorous and sustainable Indigenous community housing sector, operating in partnership with the Commonwealth and State, Territory and Local Governments.
  • Indigenous housing policies and programs will be developed and administered in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous communities and with respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.'

    The desired outcomes are stated to be:
  • better housing;
  • better housing services;
  • more housing;
  • improved partnerships;
  • greater effectiveness and efficiency;
  • improved performance linked to accountability; and
  • coordination of services.

    A full-scale review of the new directions is to be undertaken in 2005 which will include consultation with key stakeholders, including Indigenous communities.
