The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the Independent Education Union (IEU) commits both organisations to developing an action plan which achieves better educational outcomes for Indigenous children in non-government schools.
Under the agreement, ATSIC and the IEU are committed to increasing the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in independent schools and employing more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers and education workers.
The teaching of a more balanced history of Australia including local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history is also a key aim of the agreement, securing a major step forward for reconciliation and providing an effective means of combating racism, prejudice and harassment in schools.
The MOU has evolved as part of ATSIC's Treaty agenda which seeks to create strategic alliances to promote the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the reconciliation cause. |
