The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Kamilaroi People, Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council, Coonabarabran Showground Reserve Trust, Coonabarabran Shire Council and the New South Wales State Government.
The agreement, which was facilitated by the National Native Title Tribunal, grants part of the land next to the Coonabarabran Showground to the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act. As part of the agreement, the local Pony club will continue to use remaining areas of land for cross-country horse riding events, but will inform the Kamilaroi people before the events occur.
The agreement is the result of a three year mediation process and resolves the Kamilaroi People's native title claim and establishes certainty over the future use of the land next to the town's showgrounds. |
