Wakaya Land Transfer

Summary Information:
Title to 1,874 square kilometres of land was handed back to the Wakaya Land Trust for traditional owners by the Governor General Mr Bill Hayden on 22 October 1992. The land returned was a part of the 4,000 square kilometre Wakaya-Alyawarra land claim, lodged under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) by the Central Land Council on behalf of the traditional owners in 1980. A second part of the claim area, consisting of 2,065 square kilometres, was handed over to the Anurrete Land Trust.
