The Ngadjon Jii Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Ngadjon Jii elders, the Wet Tropics Management Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency in February 2003. The MOU recognises the spiritual connection and cultural importance of the Wooroonooran National Park to Ngadjon Jii people. The MOU aims to improve involvement of Ngadjon Jii people in land management, while maximising the economic and social benefits to Ngadjon Jii people. This is the first MOU to cover a national park area in Queensland.
The MOU covers the Wooroonooran National Park, including Mount Bartle Frere, Topaz Road National Park and the Malanda Falls Conservation Park. Among other initiatives, it creates an area of restricted access, known as Bulubu Burrguna or Top Camp. The Ngadjon Jii have the power to exclude others from this land. The MOU also allows the Ngadjon Jii to camp in the National Park and to bury their people in the park, subject to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld). |
