The Tlicho Constitution for the Tlicho Government was approved by the Dogrib Treaty 11 Council prior to the ratification vote for the Tlicho Land Claims and Self-Government Agreement. The Constitution provides for:
The exercise of power by, the duties, composition, membership and procedures of, the governing bodies;
Protection of Tlicho Citizens and other persons subject to Tlicho laws by way of 'rights and freedoms no less than those set out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms';
Tlicho Government accountability to Tlicho Citizens;
The challenging of the validity of any Tlicho law;
The principle of participation by persons in governmental decision making processes that directly affect them;
The possibility of persons other than Tlicho Citizens to be appointed or elected to Tlicho Government institutions;
Amendment of the Tlicho Constitution. |
