The Westbank First Nation is one of the seven communities which make up the Okanagan Nation. It has five reserves consisting of 2,161 hectares. The Westbank First Nation is located on the west shore of Okanagan Lake near Kelowna in British Columbia. The Westbank First Nation initially began negotiations with Canada for self-government in 1990 which ultimately resulted in the signing of the Westbank First Nation Self-Government Agreement in October 2003. It commenced comprehensive treaty negotiations with Canada and British Columbia in January 1994, and is presently negotiating an agreement in principle. It is affiliated with the Okanagan Nation Alliance but is the only member band to be involved in the treaty process. |
