Summary Information:
The Akaitcho Political Accord was initialled by the Akaitcho Territory Dene First Nations (Akaitcho DFN) (as represented by NWT Treaty 8 Corporation) and the Government of the Northwest Territories on 13 June 2000. It recognises that the Akaitcho DFN 'have governed themselves within their territory living by the Great Lakes of the Dene as given to Akaitcho DFN by the Creator'. The Accord acknowledges the significance of the 'peace and friendship' Treaty negotiated between the Akaitcho DFN and the British Crown in 1900 at Deninu Kue, and recognises the inherent right of the Akaitcho to self-governance as affirmed by the Canadian Constitution. It evinces a commitment on the part of the Akaitcho DFN, Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories to clarify and implement Treaty 8 concluded in 1900, including duties and obligations owed to the Akaitcho people by the Government of Canada. The Parties enter into a political accord to enhance the relationship between the Akaitcho and the GNWT.
Detailed Information:
The objectives of the Accord are for the parties to work co-operatively on a range of subjects which include:

  • The implementation of Treaty rights;
  • The improvement of communication and co-operation between the Parties in the areas of political, social and economic development; and
  • The consideration of arrangements regarding natural resources and the sharing of resource revenues.

    The Parties agree to meet periodically to discuss the above areas and share information. Nothing in the Accord prevents the Parties from participating in other intergovernmental agreements. It is agreed that the GNWT will be involved in discussions relating to program and service implementation which are necessary to the implementation of the Treaty. In the event of conflict between the Accord and the Akaitcho Territory Dene First Nations Framework Agreement or the Akaitcho Agreement, the latter Agreements will have precedence.
