Summary Information:
The Labrador Inuu Comprehensive Healing Strategy (the Healing Strategy) was developed in 2001 as a joint holistic approach between the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Labrador Inuit. It seeks to develop novel ways of dealing with health and education services, social programs, governance and law enforcement. Its central objectives are to create healthy, strong, safe and economically viable Innu communities. The federal government has contributed 65.3 million dollars (Canadian) in funding over a period of three years. The long-term goal is to achieve Innu communities which ultimately manage their own programs and services. Several important aspects of implementation to date include:

  • Band creation for Mushuau Innu First Nation and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation;
  • Establishment of the Labrador Health Secretariat by Health Canada;
  • Construction of a new community in Natuashish and relocation of Mushuau Innu to the new community;
  • Development and implementation of country treatment and aftercare programs;
  • Implementation of community-based health programming;
  • Increased school attendance;
  • Implementation of crime prevention projects; and
  • Continuing progress on land claim negotiations.
