| The Community-Based Self-Government Policy of the Canadian Federal Government provided that First Nation Communities could negotiate self-government agreements to secure delegated jurisdiction and authority over a variety of matters. It has since been replaced by the 1995 Inherent Right of Self-Government Policy which recognises the inherent right of self-government as an Aboriginal right under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. Self-government negotiations based on this right recognise that First Nation peoples have the right to govern themselves with respect to matters internal to their own communities, integral to their traditions, languages and culture, and regarding their relationship with land and resources. |
