The federal Canadian Government restated and clarified its Specific Claims Policy in 1982 in a document entitled Outstanding Business: A Native Claims Policy. The document outlined the policies and procedures for dealing with specific claims arising from government action in the administration of the Indian Act, and outstanding treaty obligations. The statement is composed of three parts. Part One deals with Indian treaties, the Indian Act 1876, recent history and Indian perspectives. Part Two deals with policy content and process, and Part Three sets out the guidelines for the submission and assessment of claims, and compensation. The Specific Claims Policy has since been substantially reformed by the Specific Claims Resolution Act which will establish an independent centre for the resolution of Specific Claims. |
