The Australian Heritage Council is the Australian federal government's principal advisor on heritage matters. It was established on 19 February 2004, pursuant to the Australian Heritage Council Act 2003 and replaces the Australian Heritage Commission.
Detailed Information:
The central responsibilities of the Council include:

'-assessing whether a place meets the National Heritage criteria or the Commonwealth Heritage criteria;
-advising the Minister on conserving and protecting places included, or being considered for inclusion, in the National Heritage List or Commonwealth Heritage List;
-inviting public comment on whether a place meets any of the National Heritage criteria or Commonwealth Heritage criteria and whether a place should be included in the National Heritage List or Commonwealth Heritage List
promoting the identification, assessment, conservation and monitoring of heritage;
-keeping the Register of the National Estate;
-the ability to prepare reports on any matters related to the functions of the Council;
-a duty not to disclose the Council's assessments and advice until such time as is appropriate.' (Australian Heritage Council, 'News and Information').
