| The City of Ballarat Statement of Commitment to the Local Indigenous Community is a reflection of the City's efforts at reconciliation with Indigenous people. It publicly acknowledges the contribution of the local Indigenous community. The document was devised as a means of encouraging greater understanding of, respect for and development of opportunities for the Indigenous people of the Ballarat region. The Statement was presented to local elders during a traditional ceremony on 9 April 2003. | ||

| The Statement acknowledges that the Wauthaurong were the first people of the Ballarat region and that many are members of the Stolen Generations. It acknowledges Ballarat's role in that history and recognises the present Indigenous community of Ballarat as the custodian of the Wathaurong lands. The Statement expresses Ballarat's vision to build stronger relationships with Indigenous Australians and to eliminate racism and discrimination in the community. Further, the Statement expresses the City's recognition of the continuous habitation of the area by the Wathaurong people and their prior occupation as original settlers and owners. In addition, the customs and traditions of Indigenous Australians and their relationship with the land are acknowledged. The Statement sets out the City's support for the reconciliation process and outlines its commitments with respect to: -Preservation of cultural heritage; -Indigenous Education; -Consultation regarding cultural sensitivity; -Indigenous invovement in local events; -Support for treaty negotiations; -Advocacy; -Program implementation; -Protection of significant sites; and -Consultation regarding the use of traditional place names. | ||
