The Pastoral Land Act 1992 (NT) is an 'Act to make provision for the conversion and granting of title to pastoral land and the administration, management and conservation of pastoral land, and for related purposes' (long title). The object of the Act is to: 1) 'to provide a form of tenure of Crown land that facilitates the sustainable use of land for pastoral purposes and the economic viability of the pastoral industry'; 2) provide for the monitoring of land, prevention of degradation and rehabilitation of degraded land; 3) 'to recognise the right of Aborigines to follow traditional pursuits on pastoral land'; 4) 'to provide reasonable access for the public across pastoral land to waters and places of public interest'; and 5) 'to provide a procedure to establish Aboriginal community living areas on pastoral land' (s.4). The Act includes provisions relating to leases of Pastoral Land as well as monitoring and access to this type of land. Part 8 of the Act deals with Aboriginal Community Living Areas. The Act also creates a Pastoral Land Board, and includes provisions for appeal and review of decisions. |
