Summary Information:
The Statement of Commitment and Action Plan builds on and develops the City of Whitehorse Aboriginal Reconciliation Action Plan 2001-2004. It also builds on the Statement of Commitment to Indigenous people adopted by the Council in 1997. It presents a strategic framework regarding reconciliation and priority areas for Council implementation. The Action Plan incorporates a range of initiatives into services provided by Council. It also includes the acknowledgement of the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners at all Council functions, development of the City's art collection to include works by indigenous artists, seeking funding for an Aboriginal Heritage Study and establishing an Indigenous library collection. The Action Plan was developed in collaboration with the Whitehorse Friends for Reconciliation.
Detailed Information:
The Policy Objectives of the Action Plan are: -Good government, including the facilitation of positive relationships between Councillors, Council Officers, Whitehorse citizens and Indigenous communities; -The Evolving City, ensuring that Indigenous community needs are included within Council's strategic, social, economic and physical planning; -Appropriate services and facilities; -A supportive community spirit and city pride, including the promotion of recognition of traditional ownership and cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians; and -Productive resources, involving the raising of Council staff awareness of Indigenous issues. A set of strategies and actions is set out in the Action Plan relating to each of these policy objectives.
