| The Agreement was made pursuant to discussions held between the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments regarding the question of Aboriginal living areas and land claims to stock routes and reserves in the Northern Territory. According to the Agreement the Commonwealth will take action to provide land on portions of stock routes and stock reserves. The Northern Territory Government will take action to provide living areas through excisions of pastoral leases. The Commonwealth will amend the Aboriginal Lands Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 in order to provide for the grant of certain parts of existing stock routes and reserve claims. The areas to be included will be determined after consultation between the governments. Pastoral excisions will be granted under a special freehold title to be provided under Northern Territory legislation. This will include amendments to the Crown Lands Act 1992, the Lands Acquisition Act 1978 and the Mining Act 1980. | ||
