Mining company Crescent Gold Ltd and the Wongatha Claim Group signed a Land Access Agreement (LAA) in March 2005. The LAA covers Crescent Gold's entire portfolio of mining tenements in the Laverton region of Western Australia and allows for the company to advance its application to the Western Australian Minister for Mines for a mining lease over Crescent's new Sickle tenement. In addition, the LAA provides for shares to be issued by Crescent to the Wongatha native title claimants as part consideration for entering into and performing their obligations under the agreement. The shares will be issued to the NEIB Aboriginal Corporation as trustee for the Wongatha Aboriginal Charitable Trust. The NEIB Aboriginal Corporation negotiated with Crescent over a period of six to nine months before finalising the agreement. The Department of Industry and Resources also assisted in the negotiation process. |
