| The Aboriginal Lands Amendment Act 2004 (Tas) is an 'Act to amend the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995 (Tas) and to provide for other matters'. The latter Act was passed for the purpose of 'granting to Aboriginal people certain parcels of land of historic or cultural significance' (long title). The amending legislation provides for the cessation of the reserved status of certain Crown land in Tasmania, such that title may be returned to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. These areas include the Clarke Island Nature Reserve, an area of land on Goose Island, an area of land at Wybalenna on Flinders Island, and areas of land on Cape Barren Island, which are all located in the Bass Strait. The amending legislation approving the transfer was passed by the Tasmanian State Parliament in March 2005 by a majority of one vote. |
