Summary Information:
The Tennant Creek 'A Safer Community' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed between the Tennant Creek Community and the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments. The SRA facilitates new governance initiatives, with the aim of increasing community harmony and safety. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA focuses on governance and community safety. The Aboriginal elders are keen to restore respect for their traditional country and people, and will work with non-Indigenous people to improve safety and justice in Tennant Creek. Shared Responsibilities The Northern Territory and Commonwealth Governments will fund the establishment of an Elders Council. Associated activities such as planning, community consultation and media promotion will also be provided. The Commonwealth Government will commit $363,000 to this agreement. Under the SRA, members of the community Elders Council will work with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous members of the community. They will assist with policing, the justice system, education and other activities. The Tennant Creek 'A Safer Community' SRA will be negotiated by the Tennant Creek Indigenous Coordination Centre.
