Summary Information:
The Tara 'Improving School Attendance' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed between the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments and the Indigenous community at Neutral Junction Station. The SRA commits the community to being more involved in education activities.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:

Purpose

The SRA focuses on early childhood education and school attendance. The key aims of the SRA are to ensure that children attend school and that parents are involved in their children's education. The community is already home to services such as a health clinic, women's centre and primary school.

Shared Responsibilities

The community at Tara will contribute by:
- providing a car service to take children to and from school;
- assisting in general community clean up;
- planting and maintaining local trees; and
- arranging sporting and recreational activities for children.

Parents will attend training to enhance younger children's playgroup activities, as well as continue to wash school uniforms, provide healthy meals and construct a bike track and playground.

Men in the community will cement the floor of the community workshop and the verandahs of the women's centre.

The Commonwealth Government will provide funds for equipment and for additional Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) places. $45,000 has been allocated to support this contribution.

Another contributor to this SRA is the Neutral Junction School, which will provide a venue for both school and community activities, and record student participation and attendance.

The Tara 'Improving School Attendance' SRA will be negotiated by the Tennant Creek Indigenous Coordination Centre.
