Summary Information: | ||
The Wilora 'Better Health and Education' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed between the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments and the Wilora community. Wilora is located 26 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, and is served by a health clinic, a women's centre and a primary school. The SRA will provide a community centre to raise health and education standards in the area. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA focuses on health and education. The new community centre will provide a meeting place for the community, as well as organised activities to improve health and education. Shared Responsibilities The Wilora residents will clean up the community and prepare the site for a meeting place. They will also provide labour for the construction of the meeting place. In addition to this, volunteers will commence a school lunch program and paint a mural at the school The women's centre is to be cleaned up, as it will become the venue for a community band, music tuition and an after-school program. The Australian Government will provide $45,000 to contribute to the new meeting place as well as providing equipment and materials to set up community health and education programs. Another contributor to this SRA is the Stirling School at Wilora, which will provide a venue for both school and community activities, and record student participation and attendance. The Wilora 'Better Health and Education' SRA will be negotiated by the Tennant Creek Indigenous Coordination Centre. |
