Summary Information:
The Wadeye 'Healthy Housing and Women's Development' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was created to fulfil the initiatives of the Wadeye Shared Responsibility Agreement, signed as part of the Council of Australian Government's (COAG) trial of Whole of Government Initiatives. The 'Healthy Housing and Women's Development' SRA provides housing and women programs to specifically meet one of three regional priorities established in the COAG trial. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA focuses on improving living standards in Wadeye. In particular this SRA continues the work of the Thamarrurr Regional Council and territory and federal governments in improving housing in the community, and improving the circumstances of women, families and young people. The SRA will provide new housing and upgrades to existing structures. It will also introduce and strengthen women's programs in Wadeye. Shared Responsibilities The Commonwealth government and the Northern Territory government are funding the construction and clean up of houses in Wadeye. This will overcome housing shortages and provide local jobs and employment training. The governments will also run programs out of the Ngepan Patha Centre. The Commonwealth government will contribute $900,000 to this SRA. The community of Wadeye will be involved in the construction of new houses and will help to fix existing homes. The Women's Association, Wadeye Palngun Warangat, will promote women's and family activities. The Ngepan Patha Centre will offer business and computing skills courses for women and organise social events. A sewing business will be developed. Other community initiatives, such as the 'no school, no pool' policy are operating concurrently with this SRA to improve school attendance. The Wadeye 'Healthy Housing and Women's Development' Shared Responsibility Agreement SRA will be negotiated by the Darwin Indigenous Coordination Centre.
