| The Mungkarta 'Maintain language, culture and tradition' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) commits the Commonwealth government and the Mungkarta community to preserving history and culture. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The SRA has been signed to ensure that structures are in place to preserve and pass on knowledge about the Mungkarta community. The SRA will provide a meeting place which will become a site for meetings, church services and cultural activites. The new meeting place will also record cultural and historical information. Shared Responsibilities The Commonwealth government will provide $45,000 in funding to this SRA to assist the construction of the meeting place. The funding will also provide materials for the publication and distribution of books, and for producing art work. The community at Mungkarta will build the meeting place, and use it for the purposes stated above. The local school will be involved in maintaining culture too. The school will assist with printing and binding books, and will ensure that art is part of the school curriculum. The Mungkarta SRA is adminstered by the Tennant Creek Indigenous Coordination Centre. | ||
