| The Tennant Creek 'Support for Young People' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) will establish a youth accommodation service for young people affected by family breakdown. The SRA brings together the Commonwealth government, the Julalikari Council and the wider Tennant Creek community in supporting Indigenous families. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose This SRA provides youth accommodation facilities in Tennant Creek. The aim of the SRA is to support families, and in doing so provide youth with a secure future. The Commonwealth government also wants to ensure that families are supporting their children. To achieve this aim, the SRA establishes a short-term youth accommodation service to be run by the Julalikari Council. Shared responsibilities The Commonwealth government will contribute $136,000 towards furniture, utilities and food for the accommodation project. The Commonwealth will also fund the initial salaries for four youth-support officers. The Tennant Creek community will select four people to participate in youth-support training. The Julalikari Council will provide two houses for youth accommodation. They will also provide a support vehicle and fund related expenses. Families are also engaged in proactive programs to address issues such as alcohol abuse and family violence. They will work with the Julalikari Council and their associated agencies on these issues. Young people will work with local service providers and will commit to using the facilities. Local services providers will offer training and counselling. | ||
