| The Western Australian Government granted a perpetual lease over 7931 hectares of land on the King River to the Darwulah Aboriginal Corporation on 2 May 2004. The grant was made following a review of Wyndham town water supply by the Water and Rivers Commission which found that the King River portion was surplus to town requirements. |

The area of land over which the lease was granted, which encompasses the Cockburn Ranges, includes several significant cultural sites, particularly around the water holes known locally as the King River Pools. The grant was made with the support of the Balangarra native title claimants. The lease gives the lessees the ability to control access to the area and to protect important cultural sites. The Darwulah Aboriginal Corporation will also be able to sub-lease parts of the area to adjoining pastoralists. Such arrangements may therefore provide income for maintenance of the area.
It is understood that the Darwulah People have plans for environmental and cultural tourism projects in the area. | |
