| The Doomadgee 'Building the Community' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) provides a women's centre for the community at Doomadgee. The centre will add to the community's current facilities, and offer a range of new activities. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The construction of a community centre for women will provide a venue for a range of activities. In its initial stages, the centre will provided a venue for business, networking and sharing ideas, development of women's leadership skills, and activities surrounding health and well-being. In the future, it is hoped that the centre will provide additional services such as a laundromat, a hairdressing salon and arts and crafts facilities. Shared Responsibilities Under the SRA, the Commonwealth government will contribute to the construction of the centre. $250,000 will be available for construction and fitting-out of the centre. This money will also fund Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) places to assist with building the centre. The women of Doomadgee agree to promote the centre and treat it with respect. The wider Doomadgee community will build the centre. Once constructed, the community agree to support local women in developing activities and business opportunities at the centre. The Doomadgee SRA is administered by the Mount Isa Indigenous Coordination Centre. | ||
