Summary Information: | |
A native title agreement was signed between the traditional owners of the Murchison region in Western Australia and mining company Murchison Metals on 31 August 2005. The agreement was reached between the Wajarri elders, the Ngoonooru Wadjari People and Murchison Metals paving the way for mining operations to commence in the Jackhills area approximately 650 kilometres northeast of Perth. Mining is to begin towards the end of 2005.
The agreement removes any obstacles to the mining project otherwise posed by native title restrictions. It also provides a range of benefits for the traditional owners including compensation, employment and business opportunities. The agreement provides for the establishment of a monitoring committee which will review and facilitate these employment and training opportunities. In addition, a range of environmental and cultural conditions form part of the agreement.
The traditional owners were represented by the Yamatji Land and Sea Council during the course of negotiations towards the agreement. |
