Summary Information: | ||
The Bidyadanga 'Sporting Activities' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed in May 2005. The SRA will help provide new sporting facilities for the community, which locals believe will assist the health and prosperity of young people. Under the SRA, the local basketball courts will be repaired and upgraded, as will the playground and shaded areas. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The Bidyadanga community wants to provide activities for young people to keep them occupied. They see the provision of organised sporting activities as a first step towards ensuring a prosperous future for their children. Shared Responsibilities The Bidyadanga community will run sporting programs and competitions, upgrade the local playground and establish a barbeque and other sheltered areas. The community will also convert a community house into a youth activity centre. The Commonwealth and Western Australian governments will repair and upgrade sporting facilities. The Commonwealth government contribution totals $150,000. This SRA is administered by the Broome Indigenous Coordination Centre. |
