The Kalumburu Community have signed two Shared Responsibility Agreements (SRAs) with the Commonwealth Government to improve children's health and local governance structures. The 'Governance Training' SRA provides a resident Community Development Officer to mentor and support the Community Council.. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Detailed Information: | ||
Purpose The Kalumburu Community Council wants to improve their governance structures, which is affected by the isolation of the community. Under the SRA, the Community Council will be mentored in governance and conflict resolution. The SRA also provides a Community Development Officer to assist the Council. Shared Responsibilities The Community Council, along with the CEO of the Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation, will attend training programs. The Commonwealth Government will fund the wages and housing of the Community Development Officer, and the training and mentoring program. Overall, this funding amounts to $335,000. The Kalumburu SRAs are administered by the Kununurra Indigenous Coordination Centre. |
