| The Ngumpan 'Recreational Facilities' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed in June 2005. The SRA focuses on providing activities for young people by upgrading sporting and recreational facilities in Ngumpan. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The SRA will provide funds to redevelop the existing basketball court and construct shade areas. This will allow the community at Ngumpan to participate in sporting activities despite the hot conditions there. The redeveloped basketball court will also act as a venue for meetings and cultural events. Shared Responsibilities Under the SRA, the community has agreed to volunteer their labour to redevelop the basketball court. The community will also run competitions, coach and referee games and encourage children to participate. The Commonwealth Government will provide $140,000 towards the basketball court redevelopment and the construction of shade areas. The Ngumpan SRA is administered by the Derby Indigenous Coordination Centre. | ||
