Subject Matter: |
Summary Information:
The Coonana Community signed a Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) with the Commonwealth Government in 2005 to improve the community water supply. The SRA provides the infrastructure to protect local dams from contamination by feral animals.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:

Coonana is 'situated on a 250,000 acre pastoral lease along the Trans Australia railway line in remote Western Australia and relies on water stored in six dams that are visited by numerous feral horses, cattle and camels' (SRA Fact Sheet). Under the SRA, new infrastructure will protect the dams, imporving the local water supply.

Key tasks to be completed include:
- building trap yards to cull feral animals;
- providing troughs for animals; and
- fencing the dams.

Shared Responsibilities

The Commonwealth Government will provide $40,500 towards the construction of the yards, and providing troughs and fencing materials.

The Coonana Community will build the yards, complete the fencing and maintain the dams. They will also monitor stock levels. A 'work team' will be established to work with local pastoralists.

The Coonana SRA is administered by the Kalgoorlie Indigenous Coordination Centre.
