Summary Information:
The Marta Marta Indigenous Community signed a Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) in 2005 to improve and expand their current farming activities. Under the SRA, the community will receive grain and seedlings, specialist advice and infrastructure in return for committing to a new agricultural enterprise.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:

Purpose

This SRA focuses on supporting economic development through agriculture. The Marta Marta community wants to create a business to sell sorghum to nearby cattle stations and native shrubs to a local mining company. The SRA will provide the infrastructure for the community to expand its current farming activities to establish the new venture.

Shared Responsibilities

The Commonwealth Government will provide $15,000 towards grain, seedlings, tools and training. This funding will also allow the power to be connected to a bore pump, so that the community can irrigate their crops.

Community members will participate in agricultural training, maintain the crops and look after equipment. The income generated through the crops will go back into the business and provide local jobs.

Indigenous Community Volunteers will be recruited to provide advice and training.

The Marta Marta SRA is administered by the South Hedland Indigenous Coordination Centre.
