Summary Information:

The Conservation and Parks Commission (the Commission) was established under section 18 of the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984 (WA) (the Act). Section 21 of the Act lists its functions.

According to the Commission's website, its role is to be an advisory and policy development body to the Minister as well as a vesting body for the land and waters of Western Australia's biodiversity and Conservation Estate.

The Commission (formerly the Conservation Commission of Western Australia) was established on 16 November 2000 and at that time reported to the Minister for Environment, Racing and Gaming. Furthermore, the Minister vested national parks, conservation parks, nature reserves, state forests and timber reserves of the State of Western Australia solely in the Conservation Commission of Western Australia.

However, after an amendment to the Act in 2015, lands and waters of the Conservation Estate may now be vested solely in the Commission or jointly with an Aboriginal body corporate.

The Commission now reports to the Minister for Environment; Climate Action.
