Summary Information: | ||
The Bowraville 'Supporting a Valued Community Service' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed between the Bowraville Aboriginal Community, the Commonwealth Government, and a local organisation, Miimi Mothers. The SRA will provide support for this important Aboriginal women's organisation by providing it with a new base for its operations, which are principally aimed at providing health and other community services to local people. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The Bowraville 'Supporting a Valued Community Service' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) will support local organisation Miimi Mothers by providing a stable base for their operations. Miimi Mothers is a significant provider of services to the Bowraville Aboriginal community. It runs programs including grief counselling, liaising with families on school attendance issues, crisis accommodation, and drug and alcohol assistance. It also helps local community members to connect with mainstream services by translating information in culturally appropriate ways. Shared Responsibilities The local community will provide labour to help refurbish a house, from which Miimi Mothers can conduct its operations, and which can also be used as a community centre. The community will also support Miimi Mothers in partnership with the Bowraville Community Alliance. The Commonwealth Government will provide funds to purchase and refurbish the property. Miimi Mothers will look after the property, and will apply for grants in order to get more services for Indigenous people in Bowraville and the Nambucca Valley. Bowraville Community Alliance will support Miimi Mothers by forming a working party to link with agencies on community issues. They will also develop future SRAs to support families and young people at risk. |
