| The Brewarrina 'Community Bus' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was signed between the Brewarrina Aboriginal Community and the Commonwealth government to improve the community's access to groups outside the town. The SRA will provide a bus for transport of community groups and sports teams. This SRA was signed at the same time as the Brewarrina 'Community Parks' SRA. In addition, the Brewarrina community was a signatory to two other SRAs, addressing school attendance issues and homemaker skills for women, as part of the Murdi Paaki COAG trial. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Purpose The Brewarrina 'Community Bus' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) will assist the Brewarrina community in overcoming their isolation by more regular contact with groups outside the town. The SRA provides for a community bus, which will be used to transport community groups and sporting teams to participate in activities outside the town, including sporting matches and camping/cultural trips. Shared Responsibilities The local community will provide lockable storage for the bus, devise bus travel rules and be responsible for their enforcement, and will develop a hire schedule for use of the bus that will cover the costs of petrol, drivers and maintenance. Community members will also be trained to drive the bus, and will regularly clean and maintain the bus. Community members will contribute time and resources to sporting activities and camping/cultural trips. The Commonwealth Government will provide funds for the purchase of the bus. | ||
