    Summary Information:
The La Perouse 'Youth Haven - Keeping Young People Safe' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) will assist the La Pa Bummers Youth Haven, a local community organisation, to expand its range of activities in order to attract and retain young people.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
    Detailed Information:
    Purpose

La Perouse is a discrete Indigenous community on the Northern Peninsula of Port Botany. This SRA, one of two recently signed by the La Perouse community, is aimed at assisting the La Pa Bummers Youth Haven, an organisation run by community volunteers, to expand its range of activities for local young people. Lack of funding has limited the variety of activities on offer, meaning that fewer young people have wanted to take part. The Youth Haven wants to attract more high school age children by expanding its range of activities to include music lessons, sporting activities, and computer lessons. The SRA will provide funding and support for this expansion.

    Shared Responsibilities

The local community will help volunteers at the Youth Haven to supervise young people; help to develop a business plan for the Youth Haven; work with a Community Development Facilitator to develop a longer-term youth strategy for the community; and negotiate with government and the private sector for sponsorship and future funding arrangements for the Youth Haven. Community volunteers will mentor young people and encourage parents to support their children attending and taking part in the Youth Haven's activities. Community members will make sure that their children take part in the activities.

The Commonwealth Government will fund the purchase of recreation and administrative equipment, as well as public liability insurance for the Youth Haven. It will also help to plan and organise funding for future activities.

The La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council will provide free use of the Youth Haven facility for 12 months, and will improve outside lighting.

The Maroubra Police and Community Youth Club will make their bus available to pick up and drop off students at the Youth Haven.

The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service will carry out field trips.
