The City of Greater Bendigo was formed in 1994, from the amalgamation of the Shires of Marong, McIvor, Strathfieldsaye and Huntly, the Borough of Eaglehawk and the City of Bendigo. Bendigo is located in the geographic heart of the southern Australian State of Victoria, 150 kilometres north west of the state capital, Melbourne. It encompasses an area of 3000 square kilometers, and has a population of 90,000 people. The city is a blend of urban, semi urban and rural areas.

The Jaara people are the original inhabitants of the area now known as the City of Bendigo.
